Ander Herrera on Thursday has been suspended for four matches following his red card during the Club World Cup clash between Boca Juniors and Benfica.

The midfielder was sent off after attempting “to intimidate the referee” while a VAR review was in progress. The situation escalated to the point where security personnel had to step in to de-escalate the tension.

The disciplinary committee imposed the suspension citing “unsportsmanlike conduct and interference with officiating procedures.”

Herrera will now miss the next four competitive fixtures, dealing a blow to his side’s campaign in the tournament.
