Harry Kane scored on his 100th Bundesliga appearance while Luis Diaz netted a hat-trick as Bayern Munich thrashed RB Leipzig 6-1 to go top of the table
Goals from Luis Diaz, Aleksandar Pavlovic and Michael Olise put Bayern in control by half-time, before Diaz completed his treble and Kane marked his landmark century with a goal. Vincent Kompany's side came into the game off the back of disappointing draws against Augsburg in the Bundesliga and Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League, results that raised questions about their defensive resolve.
But after dropping four points in their opening five league games - as many as they dropped in their first 17 outings last season - the defending Bundesliga champions looked back to their irresistible best as they dominated Leipzig. In the 12th minute, Diaz ran onto a Joshua Kimmich dink and finished past Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt, before the Colombian turned provider and teed up Pavlovic to rifle in at the near post.
Olise completed the first-half rout by firing into the bottom corner after exchanging passes with Harry Kane, who had dropped deep to create space. Half-time offered a ragged Leipzig only temporary respite, as 95 seconds into the second period Diaz curled into the far bottom corner for his second goal of the evening.
Kane soon marked his 100th Bundesliga appearance with his 102nd goal in the competition, tapping in from Nathaniel Brown's cut-back. With 20 minutes left to play, Diaz completed a fabulous hat-trick with a right-footed rocket into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
Andrija Maksimovic scored an injury-time consolation for the visitors with a fine strike into the top corner. Bayern registered 17 shots on target before Leipzig managed their first in the 78th minute, and would have scored more had Vandevoordt not made 11 saves.
Borussia Dortmund's goalless draw with Union Berlin earlier on Saturday means Bayern spend the night top of the table with 14 points, though Freiburg will go two points clear if they beat Bayer Leverkusen on Sunday. Leipzig's Jekyll and Hyde start to the campaign continues; they find themselves seventh in the standings after three home wins and three away defeats.
