Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has said he will leave the club if they don’t listen to his request about keeping the squad small.
Guardiola on Wednesday explained that he doesn’t want a large squad because it would mean some players won’t get a chance to play.
He said it would bother his conscience to sign players only to leave them on the bench.
“I told the club I don’t want a big squad. I don’t want to put five, six players in the tribune, I don’t want that. I will quit,” he said.
“If they don’t make a short squad, I will not stay. It’s impossible for my soul to put players in the tribune and not play.”
Manchester City have had a tough season. Their loss to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final last weekend means they will finish the season without winning a major trophy.
They are still fighting to qualify for the Champions League next season, with the final games to be played on Sunday.
However, City gave themselves a better chance on Tuesday by beating Bournemouth 3-1.
As the Premier League table stands, City are competing with Chelsea, Newcastle, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest for three Champions League spots.
City now have 68 points—two more than Chelsea, Newcastle and Villa. Forest are one point behind them.
If they beat Fulham, City will secure third place. Even a draw could be enough due to their strong goal difference.
