Spanish striker jailed ahead of Spain’s World Cup opener

Spain are preparing for their FIFA World Cup opener against Cape Verde, but while at home Spanish striker, Rafa Mir has received a jail sentence for assault and bodily arm and is set to go to prison for eight and half years

The Fourth Section of the Provincial Court of Valencia has sentenced footballer Rafa Mir to eight and a half years in prison. The court found him guilty of sexual assault and bodily harm, as reported this Monday by the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV).

The legal proceedings also involve a second defendant, a footballer and friend of Mir. In his case, the Valencia Court sentenced him to 2 years in prison after finding him guilty of sexual assault, crimes against moral integrity, and minor bodily harm.

The judicial ruling, which was officially notified to the parties involved this Monday, is not final. This means that the defense for those convicted still has the legal option to appeal the court’s decision before higher courts.

Likewise, the ruling handed down by the judges establishes the corresponding civil liabilities in the form of compensation. The sentence sets payment at 64,000 euros for Rafa Mir’s victim. Meanwhile, the second convicted man must pay 6,280 euros to the other complainant.
