Qualifying for the FIFA World Cup is often considered routine for football powerhouses such as Brazil, Germany and Argentina
For smaller nations with limited populations and resources, however, reaching football’s biggest stage remains one of the sport’s greatest achievements. Over the years, several tiny countries have defied the odds to earn a place among the world’s elite, proving that population size is not always a barrier to success on the international stage.
Leading the list is Curaçao, which became the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup after securing a place at the 2026 tournament. With a population of just 185,000 people, the Caribbean island surpassed Iceland’s previous record and etched its name into football history.
Iceland, with a population of around 340,000, previously held the distinction after qualifying for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The Nordic nation had already captured global attention by reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 before earning its first World Cup appearance.
Another remarkable newcomer is Cape Verde. The island nation, home to about 528,000 people, secured a historic place at the 2026 World Cup, becoming one of the smallest countries ever to reach the finals.
Paraguay, despite now having a population of more than seven million, was one of the world’s smallest World Cup participants when it competed at the inaugural tournament in 1930. Historical estimates place its population at roughly 860,000 at the time.
Trinidad and Tobago’s qualification for the 2006 World Cup remains one of the Caribbean’s greatest football achievements. With a population of approximately 1.3 million, the Soca Warriors earned worldwide admiration after holding Sweden to a draw during their debut tournament.
Northern Ireland also features prominently on the list. With a population of around 1.4 million during its World Cup appearances, the nation enjoyed memorable campaigns, including a famous victory over hosts Spain at the 1982 tournament.
Kuwait became one of Asia’s early World Cup representatives when it qualified for the 1982 finals in Spain. At the time, the Gulf nation had a population of approximately 1.5 million.
Three countries share the final positions on the list with populations of around 1.9 million at the time of their World Cup appearances. Slovenia qualified for its first World Cup in 2002 following its independence from the former Yugoslavia, while Uruguay won the inaugural World Cup in 1930 despite having fewer than two million residents. The United Arab Emirates also reached the finals in 1990, becoming one of the earliest Gulf nations to compete on football’s biggest stage.
The 10 countries ranked according to their populations.
Curaçao — 185,000
Iceland — 340,000
Cape Verde — 528,000
Paraguay — 860,000
Trinidad and Tobago — 1.3 million
Northern Ireland — 1.4 million
Kuwait — 1.5 million
Slovenia — 1.9 million
Uruguay — 1.9 million
United Arab Emirates — 1.9 million
The achievements of these nations serve as a reminder that success in football is not determined solely by population size.
Through strong development systems, talented players, and determined performances, some of the world’s smallest countries have earned their place on the grandest stage in world football.
