Real Madrid maintain 100% start with win over RB Leipzig

Bernardo Silva scored his first goal for Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho's side beat RB Leipzig to maintain their 100% start in the Champions League

The midfielder, who joined from Manchester City in the summer, converted from close range to put the Spaniards in front two minutes before half-time. Arda Guler bundled over the goalline for the second, while Kylian Mbappe scored his 12th goal in 12 games this season, and £120m summer signing Yan Diomande netted against his old club just before the end.

RB Leipzig looked the more dangerous side for much of the first half, but were made to rue missed chances as Thibaut Courtois denied both Christopher Nkunku and Romulo with smart saves. Real improved and Bernardo forced the ball over the line after Guler's strike deflected off a defender and squirmed between the legs of goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt.

The Belgium goalkeeper did well to tip a stinging Federico Valverde effort past the post early in the second half, but was powerless to prevent Guler meeting Mbappe's header across the face of goal for a simple tap-in. Frenchman Mbappe scooped a shot into the side netting from a Jude Bellingham cut-back as he looked for his customary goal, and he found it late on with a curling finish into the corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Tidiam Gomis finished off a neat move to pull a goal back for Leipzig, but two minutes later, Real substitute Diomande - who left the German side in the summer - rifled in a spectacular volley from outside the box. After facing Barcelona in the first Clasico of the season on Sunday, 25 October, Jose Mourinho's men will travel to Greece to face AEK Athens on Wednesday, 4 November, while Leipzig will host Manchester City later that evening.
