Sports betting involves predicting an outcome in a sporting event and placing money on that prediction. For example, if Arsenal are playing Chelsea, you might predict that Arsenal will win, both teams will score, or the match will have more than 2.5 goals.
Each prediction has odds that determine your potential return if the bet wins.
Key sports betting terms to know:
Start by selecting a sportsbook authorised to operate in your location. When evaluating betting sites, consider licensing, available sports, odds, deposit and withdrawal options, customer support and responsible-gambling tools.
Visit the sportsbook's official website or app and create an account. You may need to provide your name, contact information, date of birth and identification details to complete verification.
Before depositing money, decide how much you can afford to lose.
Keep betting funds separate from money needed for essentials such as rent, food, transport and savings.
Choose a sport you understand, such as football, basketball or tennis. For example, you could select an upcoming Premier League match and review its available betting markets.
Bookmakers may offer different odds for the same match and market. Comparing odds helps you identify which bookmaker offers a higher potential payout on an identical selection.
Visit betCompare to explore football betting odds across bookmakers.
Select your preferred market, such as a home win or Over 2.5 goals. Add your selection to the bet slip, enter your stake and review the potential return.
Before confirming, review your selection, odds and stake. Once accepted, your bet will normally remain active until the event is settled. You can check your bet history for the result and payout. Remember that all bets involve risk, and winning is never guaranteed.
Betting odds indicate the potential payout on a selection and reflect the probability implied by the bookmaker's price. Decimal odds are widely used by Nigerian sportsbooks.
Example:
You place ₦1,000 on a football match at odds of 1.80.
Formula:
Potential total return = Stake × Decimal Odds
Higher odds generally indicate a lower implied probability of winning, while lower odds indicate a higher implied probability.
Bookmakers use different pricing models, risk assessments and market adjustments. That means the same football match can have different odds across sportsbooks.
| Bookmaker | Illustrative odds | Return on ₦1,000 |
|---|---|---|
| Bookmaker A | 1.80 | ₦1,800 |
| Bookmaker B | 1.95 | ₦1,950 |
| Bookmaker C | 2.05 | ₦2,050 |
These are hypothetical examples, not live bookmaker prices.
Comparing identical markets can help you find a better price, but higher odds do not increase your probability of winning.
The right sportsbook is not necessarily the one offering the biggest welcome bonus.
Consider these factors before registering:
Check whether the bookmaker is authorised to operate in your location.
Review the sports, leagues and betting markets available. Compare odds for events you follow regularly.
Check supported payment methods, minimum withdrawal amounts, processing times and applicable fees.
Choose a platform with an accessible website or mobile app and a straightforward bet slip.
Check whether the sportsbook offers reliable contact channels and clear complaint-resolution procedures.
A good mobile experience makes it easier to find events, manage your bet slip and track your bets.
Read bonus terms carefully, including wagering requirements, expiry dates and withdrawal restrictions.
Look for tools such as deposit limits, account time-outs and self-exclusion.

For beginners, single bets are generally easier to understand because they involve just one selection.
Sports betting carries financial risk and should be treated as entertainment, not a reliable source of income.
Set spending limits, avoid chasing losses and take breaks when necessary. If betting begins to affect your finances or wellbeing, consider using self-exclusion tools and seeking professional support.

Sports betting involves predicting the outcome of a sporting event and placing a stake on that prediction. Bookmakers provide odds that determine your potential returns if your selection wins.
Betting odds indicate the potential return on a wager and the probability implied by the bookmaker's price. For example, a ₦1,000 bet at decimal odds of 2.50 returns ₦2,500 if successful, including your original stake.
Common sports bets include singles, doubles, accumulators, 1X2, Double Chance, Both Teams to Score (BTTS), Over/Under goals, handicaps and correct score bets. Each offers different potential returns and risks.
In football betting, 1 represents a home win, X represents a draw, and 2 represents an away win. The market normally covers 90 minutes plus stoppage time, excluding extra time and penalties.
Over 2.5 goals means at least three goals must be scored during the match. Under 2.5 goals means the match must finish with two goals or fewer.
BTTS stands for Both Teams to Score. A BTTS Yes bet wins if both teams score at least one goal. BTTS No wins if at least one team fails to score.
An accumulator, also known as an acca, combines multiple selections into one bet. All selections normally need to win for the bet to pay out. Accumulators offer higher potential returns but carry greater risk.
Multiply your stake by the decimal odds to calculate your potential total return. For example, ₦2,000 at odds of 2.20 gives a potential return of ₦4,400, including your stake, and a profit of ₦2,400 before applicable deductions.
Different bookmakers may offer different odds for the same sporting event. Comparing betting odds helps you identify better-priced selections and potentially increase your returns without increasing your stake.
A bookmaker margin, also called the overround, is the pricing advantage built into betting odds. Understanding bookmaker margins can help you assess betting value and compare odds across sportsbooks.
