Kylian Mbappé made history last night. He scored a brace for France, and reached the 400 goal mark for his career so far. He is the youngest player to ever do that in the 21st century, which personifies the remarkable goal scorer we all know he is
The Frenchman plays like one of the most experienced players around, but it's important to remember there is still more to be squeezed out of Mbappé.
Real Madrid fans have already seen the benefits of him being the main man under Xabi Alonso. Right now, the Real Madrid star is the best player in the world, and that won't change anytime soon. However, he is not patting himself on the back yet. He has one man's record to break.
Kylian Mbappé, when asked about reaching 400 goals in his career, said that nobody is impressed by a player scoring 400 goals. Instead, he has his eyes on breaking the 950-goal mark, which only one player has done (Cristiano Ronaldo).
In his own words, Mbappé said: “400 goals don’t impress people. I want to make my mark in football history, so I have to score at least 400 more. There is one with 950+ goals, and another with 900+, 400 isn’t enough to stay in the circle of players who shock people”.
So, in his own view, Mbappé is not even halfway there. He has no time to celebrate, he wants to break Cristiano Ronaldo's record. And, let's face it, he might just be on pace to do it. Especially if he keeps improving season by season, which he has been doing in recent history.
He is the main man for Real Madrid under Xabi Alonso, and the main man for France under Didier Deschamps. When Zinedine Zidane takes over as France boss, then the only way is up for Mbappé.
Cristiano Ronaldo is regarded as one of the best players of all time. Many would even consider him the best, but we won't feed into that age-old cliche. If Mbappé wants to leave behind the same legacy, he has more to do than Ronaldo did.
Let's face it, Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will be remembered by a generation. The standards have changed, and players of his generation need to go above and beyond to even be spoken about in the same sentence.
Mbappé knows this, which is a truly terrifying thought for anyone who isn't a Real Madrid fan.
