Portugal national football team have confirmed their squad for the upcoming FIFA World Cup 2026, with Cristiano Ronaldo set to make a record sixth appearance at the tournament
The 41-year-old forward continues to defy time at the international level, leading a squad packed with talent and experience. His inclusion was widely expected, but it still marks a historic moment in football, as no male player has ever appeared in six World Cups.
The Head coach Roberto Martinez spoke about the emotional weight behind his selection process, particularly the tribute to former international Diogo Jota. “He is our strength, our joy. Losing Diogo was an unforgettable and very difficult moment, but the very next day it was up to all of us to fight for Diogo’s dream and for the example he always set in our national team.
He added: “Diogo Jota’s spirit, strength and example are the plus one and will always be the plus one.”
Ronaldo’s presence remains central to Portugal’s ambitions, with Martínez expected to manage his minutes carefully across a squad that blends youth and experience. The team also includes Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Félix, Rafael Leão, and Gonçalo Ramos.
The selection sets up another major tournament chapter for Ronaldo, who already holds the men’s records for international appearances and goals. Portugal will be aiming to convert their golden generation of talent into World Cup success, with expectations high for a deep run in the competition.
