Sports wrap for the weekend

Last weekend was full of excitement, especially in football and basketball, where some teams are already a step in the conference semifinal of the NBA playoff, while the Premier League drama still continues, and Victor Osimhen scored on his return from injury

Arsenal back to the top of the table

Long-standing leaders of the Premier League, Arsenal, are now back to the top of the table, three days after dropping to second place. The Gunners defeated Newcastle United by a lone goal, which sends them to the top, although Manchester City did not play a league game, and that means they have a game in hand.

FA Cup final battle is set

The battle for the oldest competition in the world is set, as Manchester City will battle Chelsea in the final of the FA Cup. Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens defeated Southampton 2-1 in the first semifinal, while the Blues won by a lone goal against Leeds United. The final is now set for the 16th of May 2026.

Inter need at least one more week to secure the Scudetto

Inter Milan needed Napoli and Milan to drop points to win the Italian Serie A over the weekend, but while both teams dropped points, the Nerazzurri also failed to win their match away to Torino. As it stands, the league leaders are 10 points ahead of Napoli with four matches to go, and a win in their next game will secure their second league title in three years.

Osimhen scores on injury return to help Galatasaray beat Fenerbahce 3-0

Victor Osimhen lived up to expectations on Sunday, marking his return from injury in emphatic fashion as he inspired Galatasaray to a commanding 3-0 derby win over Fenerbahçe, strengthening their grip on the Turkish Super Lig title race. The Nigerian striker opened the scoring five minutes before half-time, reacting quickest to stab home with his knee and set the tone for a dominant display. Barış Alper Yılmaz later doubled the lead from the spot before Lucas Torreira sealed the emphatic victory. Osimhen now has 13 goals and four assists in 20 league appearances this season, with Galatasaray maintaining a seven-point lead over their closest rivals with three matches remaining.

Simons joins the list of stars to miss the World Cup

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a major setback in their fight for Premier League survival after Xavi Simons was ruled out for the rest of the season with a serious knee injury. The 23-year-old attacking midfielder was stretchered off during Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Wolves on Saturday after a collision with Hugo Bueno. Simons initially attempted to continue but quickly went down again, prompting immediate concern from teammates and medical staff. Early indications suggest the injury could involve anterior cruciate ligament damage, which would sideline him for several months.

Keeper punches player after red card

Real Zaragoza goalkeeper Esteban Andrada is facing severe punishment for punching an opponent in a heated derby match with Huesca in Spain's second division - after he had already been sent off. The Argentine received a second yellow card for pushing over a Huesca player in stoppage time at the end of a fiery relegation battle. He then sprinted towards Huesca captain Jorge Pulido and punched him in the face. That led to a mass brawl, resulting in Huesca keeper Dani Jimenez and Zaragoza's Dani Tasende also being dismissed. Andrada later issued an apology, saying he "lost focus" and will accept any punishment that comes his way.

Five teams have one leg in the conference semi-final

In the West, Oklahoma City Thunder won game three against Phoenix Suns 121-109, and now lead the Series 3-0. A win at the Mortgage Matchup Center in Phoenix, Arizona, will send them to the conference semi-finals, but if the Suns win, they will have a chance to come back. Minnesota Timberwolves, San Antonio Spurs, and LA Lakers also need one more win to enter the semifinals, as the led 3-1 against Denver Nuggets, Portland Trailblazers, and Houston Rockets. In the East, while all games are keenly contested, Boston Celtics blew out Philadelphia 76ers to lead the series 3-1.
